I'm pretty sure that this is a good example of why Harper muzzles his candidates and requires them to run bubble campaigns and to keep away from ordinary Canadians and the media.

Or put another way, as the saying goes, "a gaffe is when a politician speaks the truth" and a Conservative gaffe is when a Conservative speaks the truth about their real priorities and concerns.

So far this week:

- banning a veterans advocate from hearing Harper speak

- spying on and kicking out students because of their Facebook page (I'm sure it had nothing to do with their Middle Eastern sounding names)

- spying on and kicking out a student because of his bumper sticker

- kicking out students because they attended a non-partisan pro-student pro-vote rally (I'm sure it had nothing to do with the Middle Eastern sounding name of one of them)

- knowing what bumper sticker you have on your car and what's on your Facebook page, and then claiming you didn't know you had a criminal fraudster as one of your closest advisors

- only allowing 4 questions to the national media

- not allowing any questions to ordinary Canadians

- Liberal signs being "targeted" and vandalized

- actively trying to block a government report on G20 police actions

- actively trying to block a government report on detainee torture allegations

- berating a local volunteer, a veteran no less, for even mentioning where Harper was going to be that day

Yup, it's a bumpy campaign trail alright.

And this is all in the last two or so days.

WTF is going on here? This is connecting to Canadians? This is how you apply for a job? This is Harper's version of open, accountable and transparent government? This is Harper's democracy.

No Questions so PM Can Play Ping Pong?

Not taking questions on local matters? Not supporting your own local candidate's "promise" of federal funding? Reprimanding veterans who volunteer their time on your own campaign? Cutting off questions so you can go for a photo op playing ping pong? Is that a way to conduct a job interview or to connect to Canadians?

This is a small local story but very telling. The over-the-top control and national "bubble" campaign is quickly becoming a side story the Conservatives would rather not have, especially in the first week of the campaign when Ignatieff is quickly closing the gap.

Here's the video. The transcript and details follow below. The really interesting bit comes at about the 3:00 mark.

The story was about a local Conservative candidate advocating on local issues and promising to bring federal funding for an overpass to ease traffic congestion. He's made that promise for the last three elections.

So the feisty local reporter, Shachi Kurl of AiChannel News, asked Harper about this local/national issue and whether the Prime Minister supported his own candidate's promise. Harper totally dodged the question naturally.

And that's when the reporting starts to get interesting.

Shachi Kurl (reporting): We would have liked to ask the Prime Minister a little, OK, a lot more about these issues, but local reporters were told by the national campaign 'Sorry, only time for one local question.' Harper had to go. He was off to a photo op... playing ping pong. [...]

Hudson Mack: Shachi Kurl joins us now with more. Shachi, there's been criticism of the Conservatives in the past for running a so-called "bubble" campaign, very tightly controlled. Describe your experience with the Prime Minister today.

SK: Well, Hudson, the event that we showed you just now was in Saanich, but myself and other local based media were told to report to a hotel in Sydney at 8 am. We then sat around for an hour. We weren't told how many events were planned. We weren't told where we were going. Only that we had to go by bus. And when we were finally able to pry a little bit of information out of a local volunteer, a retired veteran no less, I watched as a young staffer reprimanded this man for just a snippet of how the morning went. I'll leave our viewers to draw their own conclusions, Hudson.

The Harper campaign has made it very clear that they think a reporter is biased if they don't kowtow to their talking points. They've made a big deal about "going beyond" the mainstream media "directly to the local media". And this is how they do it? It ain't workin' folks.

Specifically targetting certain (not all) ethnic groups has its risks. But I suppose the idea is that they have commonalities with your social conservative agenda, right?

So is referring to them as "you people" enhancing that sense of commonality or making them feel more alienated and not one of "us"? If Harper isn't sure, he can always ask Ross Perot or the NAACP. Or Robert Downey Jr.:

With The Stephen Harper Goververnment^TM being found in contempt - the first time ever in the British Commonwealth - and losing the confidence of the House, we thought it was a good time to re-introduce this site and what is about.

This site has been set up as a depot for all of the great videos being put together by liberals and progressives.

No longer do you have to go google hunting for some video you missed or remember from long ago. From now on, you should be able to find it here. Over the past couple of years, we've collected all of the most notable Liberal ads, independent ads and videos, and a big dose of Rick Mercer.

Feel free to browse around and to send us suggestions of videos we're missing. According to the Conservative Party, doctoring a government document by inserting the word "NOT" after it has been signed so that it means the opposite of what was intended and recommended is entirely "routine".

Right.

Some might wonder about the forgery offences in the Criminal Code of Canada, but not this "law and order" party. Once again, folks, Conservative principles don't apply to Conservatives. Or apparently, maybe, Bev Oda's ministerial powers to manipulate words allows her to insert the word "NOT" into criminal laws as well?

But taking inspiration from Ms Oda's odious act, as well as the KAIROS is "NOT" going away t-shirts and this creation, where else can we go?

Quite the little tax cutter we have in Stephen Harper. Let's see the record:

raised income taxes in his first month in office

taxed income trusts in his first year despite his explicit promise not to, causing seniors and investors to lose millions and millions, including life savings

added a job killing payroll tax increase

added an air tax that Harper had promised to eliminate because it was "crippling the industry"

Harper Minister of Finance, Jim Flaherty, the one who said a GST cut was a pretty dumb idea, said he "would never presume to say never to a tax increase".

Stephen Harper: "We need to raise taxes."

All this from a guy who said he would never increase taxes. Is there anything Harper says that you can trust or believe?

A slightly long but good selection of examples of some of the lengths Stephen Harper has gone in shielding himself and his government from media scrutiny:

So much for accountability. This from the party that relies far more heavily on taxpayer dollars and gets a share of political subsidies far in excess of its democratic support.

This video is from Emily Dee, the woman behind "The Army of Us" campaign and "Pushed to the Left and Loving It" blog. As the video notes at the end:

And Harper's PMO media army that is replacing public media access to our government, does not come cheap. Not only has the PMO budget increased by over 30% over the last two years while he talks about the need for spending restraint and tells the rest of us to save, not only does he spend a record $140 million on advertising during a recession as the deficit exploded (with nearly 100 million taxpayer dollars just on the self-promoting "Economic Action Plan" ads), not only does the PMO spend nearly $1 million alone on merely distributing its press releases, but Harper is he spending millions of taxpayer dollars just to monitor the media.

G20 Boondoggle Ballads - Now With Video!

The G20 boondoggle has had at least some good results: it has certainly sparked some creative work out here in the blogosphere.

I dug into my inner Barenaked Lady and penned a quick take on this called "If I Had A Billion Dollars". But Mike Watkins' "The Wreck of the Conservative Party", inspired by Susan Delacourt's twitter call for Edmund Fitzgerald spin-offs, is brilliant and must be read.

But now JimBobbySez has taken it a step further by putting together an audio/video recording of "The Ballad of Fake Lake", also inspired by Gordon Lightfoot's classic ballad.

It's not what you know, it's who you know

Mercer's rant on Harper's double standard based on his positions on Flaherty sneaking out of the budget announcement without answering question to fly out on taxpayer dollars for a photo op at Tim Hortons, announcing an "austerity" budget while quietly increaseing the Privy Council budget by $13,000,000 (that's $250,000 per week, something I did not know) and Guergis.

So that rant comes before some more recent double standards:
- Jaffer's wrist slap for cocaine possession and DUI, 25 months after he introduced a mandatory minimum sentence bill

- an austerity budget but then voting in favour of taxpayers paying for partisan propaganda with the 10%ers and other savings which would save up to $20 million a year and then saying, even though the motion passed, they will ignore it

- promises in his election campaigns to make MPs and Parliament stronger while he contemptuously ignores and defies (1) a Parliamentary subpoena to produce detainee documents, (2) a Parliamentary motion to cancel 10%ers, and (3) a Parliamentary motion requiring approval of Parliament before prorogation

Here's a really great short video narrated by Tom Brokaw for US television on Canadian-US relations and history. There are some really great moments in there, like the hosting of stranded Americans during 9/11 and the incredible natural resources and landscapes that we share.

We have our differences and they are important, but there are no two countries that are more alike and whose people are more alike. We deride and undervalue that relationship to our own detriment. We overhype it and think it defines us to our erasure.

Much better to use the Olympics to promote a positive good, then to use the Olympics for petty partisan gain.

Conservatives politicizing Olympics to raise cash

Using the troops as political props? Old Hat.

Using our athletes as political props to raise partisan money? At least it is new hypocrisy.

They really do have no class. Or any sense of their own hypocrisy.

I wonder, though, if there aren't one or two trade-mark violations involved here since they use "Vancouver 2010 Olympics" to raise money. I know the IOC and VANOC would have their lawyers all over me if I used their trade-mark in an advertisement. This could get interesting.

Harper: Fiscal Conservative or Debt Creator?

The "base" is getting restless.
The Canadian Taxpayers' Federation has served as a farm team of sorts for the Conservatives through the years. Immigration Minister Jason Kenney once headed the organization, as did the Prime Minister's current head of communications, John Williamson.

But the federation has been distinctly unhappy with Harper's spending record of late and it has another kind of farm imagery on its mind. Here is its newly released video, which is billed as "light-hearted," even though I find it a bit scary (I think it's the glowing red eyes.)

Prime Minister Stephen Harper believes that Canadians don't care about democracy in this country and that only the "elites" are fussed by his shutting down Parliament for two months and giving himself a 3 month Harper Holiday.

Well, you know what? I care. A lot of people seem to care a lot.

If you are living in Toronto or pretty much anywhere else in Canada - or even in San Francisco, New York, Dallas or Londond, England - come out on January 23 at 1:00 local time and show that arrogant leader who the real disconnected elites are.

So how about those polls, eh?

For the first time in a very long time, the Liberals and the Conservatives are essentially tied. Well, at least they're within the margin of error.

Now polls never tell the full story, but this much is certain - whenever the party in power drops 15 points in 15 days, you can be assured of one thing: someone in charge did something really stupid.

In this case, the Prime Minister thought he could suspend Parliament for 3 months and get away with it because, in his words, "Canadians just don't care". Boy, was he wrong. Wow. He should get out more. Maybe go to Tim Hortons. Get a feel for the place.

See this is what I love about Canada. Yes, we are apathetic. But the minute someone tries to use our apathy against us, suddenly we start to care big time.

It's funny the Prime Minister doesn't get this. Instead, he just keeps saying "Oh, don't worry. Yes, I've suspended Parliament, but don't worry: I'm hard at work."

You know what? Big deal. Of course, he's at work. He's the Prime Minister. I'm sure Raul Castro is going to put in a full day tomorrow running Cuba. We just like to think we set the bar just a little bit higher than that up here.

Bottom lin is, Canadians got together. We elected 308 Members of Parliament to go to Ottawa to represent us and one Member of Parliament sent them packing.

Prime Minister, with all due respect, I know it's your job to run the country. I'm glad you're hard at it. But it's the voters who get to send the members home.

And with poll numbers like this, you might want to keep that in mind.

And a nice bit of levity right at the very end.

He also wrote the following:

We are not, as the traditional thinking goes, an apathetic people. There is something much bigger than a Facebook Group taking shape in Canada. The reaction from Canadians everywhere to Harper's arrogant attempt to shut down Parlaiment and avoid accountability started the moment he decided to undermine our democracy and go on his Harper Holiday. A lot of it is just plain old venting of anger toward Stephen Harper, but I've been quite surprised and impressed by how much of it relates to something bigger, recognizing that something has gone seriously amiss in the way we are governed over the last many years. It certainly didn't start with Stephen Harper, but our democracy and governance has been seriously threatened by an arrogant leader who will do anything and say anything to keep power and a weakened opposition which sometimes doesn't know which end is up.

So we now have an online grassroots Facebook uprising (last count 150,500+ and rising by the hundreds every few minutes) which is nothing on its own, but there are dozens of rallies planned for January 23, the first serious meetings for which occurred over the weekend. These are not being organized by any political party. Then there are a number of websites that have sprung up, including noporogue.ca and Citizens for Democracy. Not to be left behind by the masses, the Liberals have now started up a prorogation information page and an ad campaign.

And, of course, video which is where Liberal Video Depot comes in. This one is a bit long and a bit over the top at times but it has a strong powerful message.

EXPLOSIVE - Conservative Candidate Admits Government is using stimulus for political purposes

Gordon Landon, (likely now former) Conservative Candidate for Markham Ontario, tells City TV:

You're dealing with a Conservative bureaucracy and with Conservative ministers and, unfortunately or fortunately however you want to look at it, they just do not want to proceed with this [stimulus spending in his Markham riding] until such time as the riding becomes a Conservative riding.

And also this:

Landon: There's a lot of things we're not getting here as a riding. [...] They won't give it to this riding because it's held by a Liberal.

Host: The money can't flow because it's not a Tory riding.

Landon: That's right.

An astonishing admission from a member and candidate of the Conservative Party of gross political misconduct with stimulus spending, admitting that projects are being denied if the riding does not elect or did not elect a Conservative Member of Parliament.

"What Mr Landon is suggesting indicates a massive scandal. Doling out infrastructure money for political purposes could be considered criminal." I agree.

But that is not the first we've heard of the Conservatives using taxpayer money to buy their way into the next election, now is it? Not to mention issuing government cheques with their party slogans and personal signatures.

When the Conservatives aren't completely bungling the spending, getting only about 12% of stimulus money out the door to help working Canadians, they are funnelling whatever funds they can to Tory ridings. The reality is that they are on more of an announcement rampage than a funding rampage, almost all in Tory ridings. This is appalling, anti-democratic behaviour from a government that is supposed to be acting for all of us.

The League of Hypocrites: Harper, Layton, Duceppe (GritGirl)

Things are starting to heat up with a lot of Canadians getting increasingly tired of Stephen Harper and his games and his hypocrisy.

The latest instalment from GritGirl goes after "The League of Hypocrites", the coalition of the absurd among Harper, Layton and Duceppe.

Is calling them "hypocrites" harsh? Well consider the facts:

- Harper has screached so many times that he could not support a government that relied upon the support of the "socialists and separatists", that to do so created an unacceptable instability in the Canadian federation and was anti-democratic and wrong. Not only has he tucked his principle between his legs on another issue just to keep his grip on power, but this is not the first time. We know he had serious discussions and even, in his words, an "agreement" with the Bloc and the NDP to support Harper taking over government without an election. He was planning on relying on the support of the "socialists and separatists" then, and he's relying on the support of the "socialists and separatists" now.

- Layton was quite apoplectic in January 2009 when the Liberals decided, in the middle of a recession, it was better to get some assistance out to Canadians in need rather than have an election since the Conservatives had done sweet F**k all up until they were forced to act by Ignatieff. He said over and over and over again in January and through to the end of the spring session that he could not trust Harper, he had no confidence in Harper, the Liberals were wrong to support Harper, it was far better to change the government immediately without hesitation. Well, we all know now that that was just bluster and smoke and the little emperor had no clothes.

Ignatieff: Harper worse than Palin on climate change

In a great speech full of vision and economic policy, I can't help but focus in on one of the best one-liners I've heard in quite a while:

"We're investing less in renewables than the state of Alaska. So when it comes to clean energy, Stephen Harper's not just behind Barack Obama, he's behind Sarah Palin."

Full speech is here, but I'll give you this additional poignant excerpt as well, but read the whole speech for both the sharper attacks on Harper's use of stimulus to fund Conservative ridings, and his general fiscal mismanagement, but also about what a Liberal government under Michael Ignatieff would look like. The election that comes, and it will come, will be about choices and whether Canadians think more of the same is good enough or whether Canadians think we can do better.

"Back in July, after the G8 Summit in Italy, Mr. Harper gave an interview to The Globe and Mail, in which he said, and I quote:

“I don’t believe that any taxes are good taxes.”

Think about that for a moment.

“Je ne crois pas qu’aucune taxe soit bonne,” a dit Stephen Harper.

C’est une déclaration renversante pour un premier ministre.

It’s an astonishing statement for a prime minister to make.

We pay taxes, Mr. Harper, so that premature infants get nursing care when they’re born; so that policemen will be there to keep our streets safe; so that we have teachers to give our kids a good education.

We pay taxes, Mr. Harper, because we’re all in this together.

It costs us something, but it makes Canada the place it is: a place where we look out for each other.

But Stephen Harper doesn’t think that way.

Stephen Harper thinks no taxes are good taxes because he believes that the only good government is no government at all.

Liberals say no.

We don’t believe in big government, but we do believe in good government. If we give up on good government the way Mr. Harper has, then we will cease to exist as one great people sharing one great country—and Liberals will never let that happen.

That’s the difference between us and them.

That’s the difference between Stephen Harper and me.

His is an ideology of the past. An ideology that’s contemptuous of anyone who sees government as a means to do good.

It’s an ideology that vaporized the day Lehman Brothers declared bankruptcy a year ago.

When Wall Street crashed, even the most ardent free marketeers turned to government to save the free market.

The last year has proved government’s value, as the guarantor of risk of last resort in the capitalist system.

The last year blew Stephen Harper’s ideology out of the water.

Liberals believe in good government. Canadians believe in good government.

You can’t get growth without good government."

What happens when a political "leader" cancels 10 provincial deals to provide univeral daycare for working parents, gives parents a measily $50 a month (after tax) when raising a child costs about $43 a day, cancels the court challenges program that has sought equality for women who escape violence at abuse shelters and who are underpaid or who are harassed, attacked pay equity, demoted his "star" women cabinet ministers and insulted any woman who has the audicity to speak out for equality?

You get a spontaneous nation-wide grassroots campaign like "PROUD TO BE A MEMBER OF THAT 'LEF-TWING FRINGE GROUP' CALLED WOMEN", supported by the Liberal Party and you get great videos like this one:

Not according to their website, I guess.

The Conservatives have a new program on their website that is supposed to speak your name. It doesn't recognize "Mohammed", the most common name in the world (and now the second most popular names for boys in England). A very telling oversight.

The funny thing about his promise, of course, is that he raised income taxes the first month he was elected, raised taxes on income trusts despite an unequivocal promise thousands of seniors relied upon, pushes for harmonized sales taxes and has given us a carbon tax with his cap and trade plans.

Ignatieff on becoming world leaders again

Michael Ignatieff is bringing out more and more policy positions, laying the groundwork for a platform that will come during an election.

At a speech yesterday, we see the strong internationalism and liberalism and proud patriotism of a Canadian Liberal, aspiring to be leaders instead of concentrating on expensive photo opportunities, unapologetically lauding Canadian internationalism and Canadians servicing abroad rather than belittling Canadians abroad or cutting veteran funding at home.

There will be an election in 2009. Relying on the support of the NDP and the Bloc despite assurances to the contrary, Harper may avoided one in October. But there will be an election and it will be about choices.

Here, Ignatieff lays out the choice we will have on Canadian internationalism.

As Ignatieff said yesterday, we once were world leaders, embracing internationalism, helping the poor and starving, sending our soldiers where they needed to be to protect the world's most vulnerable, the world's leading diplomats. We still have much of the talent out there in the world. We still have many of the leading diplomats and bravest soldiers. But we cannot be world leaders without government support and leadership at home. It's time for leadership at home so we can re-find our leadership abroad.

"Leftwing ideologues". That is what he said. About women and minorities and gays who ask the courts to enforce constitutional equality rights. Hmmmm.

I have found that those who accuse everyone else around them of being "ideologues" do so because they see the world around them in ideological terms. That is no less so for anyone on the spectrum. But it should not be how a Prime Minister of Canada should think or treat his fellow citizens. He is supposed to represent us all.

This is what he thinks of equality folks, and those who fight for it. This is what the election is about.

Harper, Hidden Agenda and The Vast Leftwing Conspiracy

Pass the tinfoil.

Conservatives are funny creatures. Yes they are.

On the one hand, they tell you until they are even blue-er in the face, 'there is no hidden agenda'. And then they turn around and tell themselves until they are even blue-er in the face, 'just wait until we get a majority, then you'll see some real hardcore conservative policies'.

And sometimes, we are fortunate enough to catch it on video.

They'll also tell you that taking snippets of tape, cutting it out of context to attack someone's character is completely legitimate when it means helping themselves keep power. Then they'll tell you it is sneaky and unfair to show full length video of Harper telling his supporters that they need to teach the opposition and the lefty judges a lesson. But, of course, consistency of principle has never been a character trait of conservatives.

Breaking New Conservative attacks ads coming this weekend

Clearly spooked by the prospect of losing the support of the Liberals, the Conservatives are about to launch an ad campaign all about the positive reasons Canadians should support the Conservatives. Er. No. Of course not.

I have been informed from a reliable source that this weekend the Tories will be launching another negative attack ad campaign against Michael Ignatieff, this time taking quotes from some BBC broadcast a couple of decades ago. They know their time is up and they are clearly desperately lashing out.

Will these ads be about Tory accomplishments? No.

Will these ads be about the economy? No.

Will these ads offer anything to Canadians? No.

Will these ads attack Ignatieff personally? Yes.

Will these ads quote Ignatieff horribly out of context? Yes.

Will these ads show how petty, small, out of ideas, clinging to power the Tories are, thereby proving Ignatieff's point? Very definitely.

Is there time up ladies and gentlemen? Oh, yes.

Will we crush them? Yes, absolutely yes.

On the Rutherford Show today, calling the NDP "a party of hardcore leftwing ideologues" that is "not like a moderate centre-left party", Jason Kenney cuts NDP at the knees, destroying any hope they had about avoiding an election and forming a coalition with the Conservatives.

Sounds like the Conservatives want an election to me.

I got a real chuckle out of the irony of Jason Kenney (or any Conservative, frankly) accusing the NDP of being "folks who drink their own kool-aid."

Yesterday, Michael Ignatieff put the Conservatives on notice that they have failed their probation and their time is now up. An excerpt of his speech to caucus is below.

Some choice excerpts:

“We’re working against a government that’s ready to sacrifice national unity to stay in power. But we have a secret weapon on our side: Stephen Harper’s record. The worst unemployment record in two decades The worst deficit in our history. And last quarter, the worst performing economy in the G7.”

“We can do better. Nous pouvons faire mieux.”

“Stephen Harper hasn’t just failed to stand up for Canada—he’s also failed to stand up for Canadians. Suaad Mohamud. Omar Khadr. Makhtal. Bahari. Mohamed. Abdelrazik. Being a Canadian must mean the Canadian government will stand up for you—no matter where, no matter when. This is at the heart of what every Liberal believes: a Canadian is a Canadian is a Canadian. A Liberal government would stand by the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. We would stand by our citizens. And we would bring forward legislation to protect Canadians abroad—to make it illegal for the government to pick and choose which citizens it protects—to make sure these abuses never happen again.”

“In fact, only two hundred of the twelve hundred infrastructure projects that the Conservatives announced in Ontario have actually received the funding they were promised. Only Stephen Harper could count that as 80% underway.”

“Stephen Harper’s response has been: “Don’t worry, give it a few years, and the books will balance themselves.” You can put that next to his promise not to run deficits in the first place. Or his promise not to tax income trusts. Or his promise not to appoint Senators.”

“You can’t count on a government that can’t count—and a prime minister who’s only good at division.”

“Liberals proudly support public health care in this country—and, unlike the Conservatives, we’re not afraid to defend it.”

“In June, we set out four tests for Stephen Harper. Mr. Harper, you have failed all four. You’ve failed to protect the most vulnerable. You’ve failed to create jobs. Failed to defend our health care. Failed to restore our public finances.”

“After four years of drift, four years of denial, four years of division and discord—Mr. Harper, your time is up. Vous avez raté votre chance. The Liberal Party cannot support this government any further. We will hold it to account. We will oppose it in Parliament. Canadians deserve better.”
